Girls-Night-Out: Girl Talk

Every once in a while the news will highlight a health-style report about how laughter is good for the body and soul. There’s even the old adage that says that laughter is the best medicine.

Who amongst us hasn’t felt better after an evening spent with the girls laughing at ourselves, our significant others and even the man with the obvious toupee at the table behind us? And besides being a clear stress release, 10-15 minutes of real giggling (as discovered by American researchers) can burn off the number of calories found in a medium square of chocolate.

Point in case was my latest girls-night-out with two really good friends. Throughout the drive to the restaurant, over drinks, dinner and dessert (slightly larger than a medium square of chocolate), our lull-less conversation goes from lighthearted banter to down n’ dirty personal follies and woes all with an undercurrent of comic relief. We discuss everything from housework to school systems to sex to no sex to the grooming habits of our significant others, even to the point where one of us confides that she’s ‘Naired’ her husbands recent crop of back hair. (Don’t worry ladies no names are mentioned here and your hubby’s will never read this).

Girl talk induced laughter especially generated by the revelation of intimate details of our marriage, our children and our family relationships, is the bonding force that cements our friendship and a reminder that we are ‘normal’. Girl talk amongst good friends provides us with a comfort level that is non-judgmental and a mutual understanding of each others large and small moments (or as discovered at this restaurant, a tendency for large and not so small portions...yummy).

After a night of girl talk we are elated and enlightened. We return home only to wake up the next morning with flashbacks of the previous nights’ conversations which undoubtedly trigger the giggles that will sustain us until our next girls-night-out; sooner rather than later.

A smile is the shortest distance between two people. -- Victor Borge
